Phthiriasis pubis
Phthiriasis pubis is a skin disease that’s presence of organism – pediculosis humanus pubis in Pubic hair & genitals hairy region especially which causes Pruritus .
Life cycle of the pubic louse :
“Egg – First instar nymph – Second instar nymph – Third instar nymph – Adult louse ”
Epidemiology of phthiriasis pubis :
Promiscuity & standards of personal hygiene
Mode of Infestation of phthiriasis pubis:
– Sexual contact (for sexually active adults)
-Children’eye lashes (commonly sexual abused)
-Through clothes or towels
Sites of pubic lice :
-Pubic area
-Lower abdomen
-Upper thigh
♥ Where do pubic lice live & how do they grow ?
-The lice are commonly appeared within the pubic hair but pubic lice can spread to other hairy parts of the body including
- Armpit
- Beard
- Chest hair
- Thigh hair
- Eye lashes can also be infested (in children that point of sexually abused )
Pubic lice have large claws allows to grasp on to coarser pubic hairs in the groin & perianal & armpit areas .Pubic lice have ability to suck blood for their nutrition & at the same time inject a saliva which causes starts itching .Pubic lice can not survive more than one day without feeding off their human host.Blood specks are commonly found on underclothes & live lice may be found also in the pubic hair .Slightly bleeding spots or biting marks may be appeared within the pubic hairs as evidently .
Signs & symptoms of phthiriasis pubis :
- Pruritus/itching
- Blue macules can be found at feeding sites
- Tiny dark brown specks of louse excreta are commonly found on the skin & underwear
- The DX is based on finding adults lice or nits .”Pubic lice (live) are commonly found on course hair ,especially pubic & perianal region”
Treatment of Phthiriasis Pubis:
Pubic lice are killed by insecticides. Some are commonly used –
- Madison
- Malathion
- Permethrin
- Pyrethrin
Topical ivermectin has been applied effectively.
Insecticides is used as cream ,shampoo for Skin,hair & dermatological disorder areas .
Complication of Phthiriasis Pubis :
– Dermatitis
-Secondary infection
-Conjunctivitis may develop (if children’s eyelashes itching due to appearing nits )
