Herpes Zoster (HZ) or Shingles

Herpes Zoster is a viral infection disease caused by Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV) that’s result appeared as localized red  patches ,blister formations on one side of the body .Its also known as Shingles .Chicken Pox may have same virus because Patient infected with chicken pox have had dormant virus before activating  Shingles in nervous system of posterior root ganglion as dermatome .

Signs & Symptoms of Herpes Zoster or Shingles :
  • Severe pain (One side of the body )
  • Red patches
  • Fluid filled blister which can be next converted to Oozed & crusted formation (localized)
  • Itching
  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • a headache
  • If left untreated – Loss of hear

    Herpes zoster ophthalmicus
Causes of Herpes Zoster :

– Diabetes

– Cancer

– AIDS

– Unknown cause

 

Complication of Herpes Zoster :

– Most commonly Post herpestic neuralgia

– Ramsay Hunt Syndrome

– Deafness

Risk factor for Herpes Zoster :

– immune compromised patient ,AIDS

– Chemotherapy or Radiation

Treatment of Herpes Zoster :

  • Anti-viral drugs  – Aciclovir 800mg 5 times daily or can be used famciclovir
  • For neuropathy pain ,you can use Gabapentin 300mg thrice daily or also use Pregabalin  for adults
  • For relief fever ,you can use acetaminophen
  • For itching you can use antihistamines – Fexofenadine 120 mg twice daily for adults
  • Lidocaine ointment can be used for reducing post herpestic neuralgia
