Erythema multiforme
Erythema means Redness of skin & multiforme means macules ,papules ,or maculopapular ,vesicles like lesion in many form or multiform (lesion between lesion, e.g. Bulls eye or Iris lesion /target like lesion)
Definition of erythema multiforme :
Erythema multiforme is a skin disease which appeared as redness of skin & maculopapular lesions in multiform on dorsum of hand & forearm commonly including target lesions caused by hypersensitivity reaction .
Types of Erythema multiforme :
-Erythema multiforme major
-Erythema multiforme minor
Location of erythema multiforme:
Commonly located on dorsum of hand .This region can be most prominent site to do diagnosis easily.but can appear in dorsum of feet,leg ,trunk,(mucus membranes like lips,oral mucosa,vagina) also
Symptoms of erythema multiforme
Erythema multiform minor:Typical Target lesions appeared or raised oedematous popular lesions are found spreadly or acrally
Erythema multiforme major :
Typical Target lesions plus involvement of one or more mucous membrane affected (i.e- oral mucosa,lips,vagina & etc.)
Most affected person’s ages are
– Young adult
-child age
Causes of erythema multiforme:
Some Medication can be attributed for occurring this disease because every drugs have side effects as low or more .But physicians are almost practically proved that some drugs are highly prone to side effect such as-
-Antibiotics:
* Penicillin
* Sulphonamides
Anticonvulsant:
* phenytoin
*Barbiturates
Anti-tuberculoides
Besides those Aspirin,Naproxen,Allopurinol & others
Some physical factors are posed for this disease also
* Radiotherapy
* Cold
* Sunlight
Others
-Leukaemia
-Non- Hodgkin lymphoma
-multiple myeloma
-polycythemia
-collagen disease
-Vasculitides
Treatment of Erythema multiforme
Erythema multiforme minor :
Symptomatic Rx,
-Antihistamines
-Analgesics (3 to 4 days)
-Topical Steroids
Erythema multiforme major :
- Symptomatic Rx,
-Antihistamines
-Analgesic (3 to 4days)
-Burow Solution dressing for severe skin disease
-Xylocaine & Diphenhydramine cream for oral ulcer
-Antibiotics if secondary infection suspected
-Oral antivirals (Acyclovir)10mg/kg/day in divided doses
-Systemic steroid- prednisolone (0.5-1mg/kg/day)
